Dubai’s $35B Mega Terminal Underway

Dubai has initiated construction of a new airport terminal, a $35 billion project poised to become the world’s largest in terms of capacity, according to the ruler of the emirate.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai’s Prime Minister and Vice President, announced on Sunday that the terminal would be five times as big as the existing Dubai International Airport and is designed to accommodate up to 260 million passengers a year.

The operational switch from Dubai International Airport to the more expansive Al Maktoum International Airport will occur progressively over the next few years, Sheikh Mohammed explained.

With the expansion, a new city is expected to develop in Dubai South to support housing needs for a million people and attract leading global companies in logistics and air transport, the Sheikh detailed in a statement on X.

He further stated that this project is set to secure stable and continuous growth for future generations, and that Dubai aims to become the global epicentre for aviation, logistics, and urban development.

Al Maktoum International Airport which opened in 2010, will eventually become the primary hub for Emirates, having five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates upon completion.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said that this development would cement Dubai’s status as a top global aviation hub, and that they’d reached another significant milestone in the growth of Dubai and its aviation sector.

Consistently pushing its capacity limits, Dubai International Airport has been the busiest airport in the world for international passengers over the last decade.

Last year, the airport served nearly 87 million travellers, surpassing figures seen before the pandemic.

Additionally, Dubai recorded a historic high of 17.15 million international overnight visitors in 2023, marking an almost 20% increase from the year before.
