Hamdan Bin Mohammed Inaugurates Dubai Reef Sustainability Initiative

The Dubai Reef project, an ambitious initiative by Dubai Can, is set to become the world’s largest marine reef development, underscoring Dubai’s commitment to ecological sustainability. Over the course of four years, 20,000 custom-designed reef modules of varying sizes will be deployed, covering an impressive 600 square kilometres of Dubai’s waters. This marks a significant move towards enhancing the region’s marine ecosystems.

In a formal announcement, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council, inaugurated the pilot phase of Dubai Reef. Highlighting its significance, Sheikh Hamdan emphasised that the project not only aligns with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum but also underscores Dubai’s role in global conservation efforts. He noted that the initiative would reinvigorate local marine life while delivering long-term socio-economic and environmental benefits.

The Dubai Reef project forms part of broader strategic objectives, including the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), the UAE Green Agenda 2030, and the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategy. The project represents a collaboration between key public and private entities, with the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) and the newly established Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority (DECCA) playing pivotal roles.

His Excellency Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, Director General of DECCA, reflected on the progress achieved so far. He explained how a two-year proof of concept conducted with reef developers HaejooX demonstrated significant increases in marine biodiversity, further supporting the project’s potential to create thriving marine habitats.

Strategic partners involved in this initiative include DP World, Nakheel Properties, Dubai Chambers, and the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, all of which will contribute to ensuring the project’s successful implementation. His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of DET, emphasised the collaborative nature of the effort, which brings together expertise from various sectors to further Dubai’s sustainability goals as part of the D33 Agenda.

The Dubai Reef initiative is expected to boost biodiversity, support fish populations, and improve the resilience of marine ecosystems. Beyond its environmental objectives, it aims to foster socio-economic development, promote eco-tourism, and protect Dubai’s marine heritage. This visionary project has garnered global interest, including from notable investor Ray Dalio, who lauded Dubai’s forward-thinking approach to ocean conservation and restoration.

As the project progresses, it is set to leave a lasting legacy, reinforcing Dubai’s leadership in environmental protection and sustainability.
