Long before Dubai expanded southwestward, the city’s commercial activities were concentrated in the historic neighbourhoods of Al Fahidi, Al Karama, and Deira. These districts, nestled along the banks of the creek, provided direct access to the Arabian Gulf, establishing Dubai as a budding trade centre. The discovery of oil in the 1960s, however, transformed the city's trajectory, fuelling the ambitions of a visionary leader with grand plans for global connectivity.

Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, with a vision to elevate Dubai on the world stage, commissioned John Harris Architects to design what would eventually become the Dubai World Trade Centre. This project marked a very important moment in Dubai's trade expansion, laying the foundation for the emirate's future growth.

Although the Dubai World Trade Centre is now firmly located north of Downtown Dubai, the development of Dubai Multi Commodities Centre and the subsequent emergence of 'Uptown Dubai' reflect a symbolic extension of the city’s infrastructure, stretching an additional 25 kilometres towards the Abu Dhabi border.

Previously seen as a peripheral area, DMCC’s strategic location has since become one of its most significant assets, giving emphasis to Dubai's long-term planning and leadership. Positioned close to Jebel Ali Port and within easy reach of Abu Dhabi, DMCC is an ideal centre for large corporations operating at the macroeconomic level across the UAE.

The future relocation of Emirates to Al Maktoum International Airport by 2034 is expected to further redefine Dubai's central business district, with Uptown Dubai positioned as a prime location, just a short drive away from the new airport.

DMCC’s remarkable achievements, including being named Global Free Zone of the Year for nine consecutive years and contributing approximately 11% of Dubai’s $15 billion FDI inflows, underscore the necessity-driven expansion of its footprint. With over 24,000 businesses, including 3,049 new registrations in the past year alone, the demand for high-quality residential, office, and commercial space has been apparent since 2016, solidifying DMCC’s status as a global leader in commodities like gold, diamonds, and energy.

Uptown Dubai, centred around a 25,800 sq.ft. plaza capable of hosting 4,000 people, is set to feature eight LEED Gold standard towers, offering a total gross floor area of 5.8 million sq.ft. The development includes two super-tall, mixed-use towers and six mid-rise residential, commercial, and hospitality buildings, all designed by the renowned architects Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, who previously worked on the Burj Khalifa and the EXPO 2020 Dubai masterplan.

The towers’ design draws inspiration from DMCC’s dominance in the diamond industry, echoing the geometric elegance of precious stones, much like the Almas Tower, completed 16 years earlier. Uptown Tower, the first of the super-tall towers, has already set a high standard, with 31 businesses occupying its 22 floors of Grade A office space, all leased before the building was finished.

The Uptown Tower also houses SO/Uptown Dubai Residences by Ennismore, a partnership with Accor, offering 225 luxury apartments on the top 28 floors. These residences, ranging from one to three bedrooms, include duplexes and penthouses with modern interiors, cutting-edge designs, and panoramic views of the Dubai skyline. The community amenities include an indoor pool, gym, private cinema, multi-purpose hall, kids club, and sky lounge, all enhanced by Accor Live Limitless loyalty program’s Diamond membership.

The SO/Uptown Dubai hotel spans 10 floors of the tower, featuring 188 bespoke rooms and suites, along with an outdoor pool, gym, spa, gourmet restaurants, trendy bars, and high-end business facilities. The hotel’s design, reflecting the natural geometry of diamonds, aligns with the overall architectural theme of the tower.

Standing at over 340 metres with 81 stories, Uptown Tower is already a significant landmark in Dubai’s southern skyline. However, it will soon be surpassed by its taller sister tower, which will become the district’s tallest structure.

Looking ahead, the Mercer House by Ellington Properties will introduce two mid-rise towers featuring studios to four-bedroom penthouses, alongside a 45,000 sq.ft. beach club, retail outlets, sports venues, spas, and fitness studios. With foundation work underway for two additional towers (23 and 17 stories), and construction starting on Mercer House, the second phase of Uptown Dubai’s development is well on its way, with completion expected by 2028.

The pre-leasing success of Uptown Tower’s Grade A offices highlights the demand for a comprehensive work-live-play destination in Dubai. Uptown Dubai has not only addressed this need but also set a new standard for luxury and sustainability in a city known for its accessibility and efficiency.

As global markets grapple with economic uncertainty, the UAE’s economy has shown resilience, growing by 3.6% last year, with a forecasted growth of 3.7% in 2024. By continuing to develop world-class destinations like Uptown Dubai, DMCC will support major international companies as they expand into new markets, taking advantage of a prime location that lives up to its name.
